Understanding Eating Disorders

Eating disorders are complex mental health conditions that involve an unhealthy relationship with food, body image, and self-perception. These disorders are not simply about food, but rather are deeply rooted in emotional, psychological, and sometimes biological factors. Left untreated, they can lead to severe health consequences and even be life-threatening. At Whole Mind Wellness, we understand the intricate nature of eating disorders and provide compassionate, evidence-based care to help individuals regain control of their health and well-being.

What Are Eating Disorders?

Eating disorders involve persistent disturbances in eating behaviors, thoughts about food, and body image that can significantly impact a person’s physical and mental health. These disorders often co-occur with other mental health conditions, such as anxiety, depression, or trauma.

The three most common types of eating disorders are:

  • Anorexia Nervosa: Characterized by extreme food restriction, a relentless pursuit of thinness, and an intense fear of gaining weight. Individuals with anorexia often see themselves as overweight, even when they are dangerously underweight.

  • Bulimia Nervosa: Involves cycles of binge eating followed by compensatory behaviors such as vomiting, excessive exercise, or the misuse of laxatives to avoid weight gain. People with bulimia often feel trapped in a cycle of guilt, shame, and self-punishment.

  • Binge Eating Disorder (BED): Marked by recurrent episodes of consuming large quantities of food, often rapidly and to the point of discomfort. Unlike bulimia, binge eating episodes are not followed by compensatory behaviors, leading to feelings of shame, guilt, and distress.
